(Own Correspondent). The residents of Marotiri and Monloa mcl in the Montoa sehoolruom on Friday last lo farewell Pie. Frank Smith, youngest sou of one of nil" ])ioneer settlers, Mr John Smith, of Finley, Moutoa, and Pie. U’oy Greenwood, of Marotiri, who are leaving New Zealand shortly for the front. A very happy evening was spent, and at its (dose, after a dainty sapper provided hy the ladies, Mr Cl a Hand, secretary of the Patriotic Commit lee, in a suitable speech, presented Pie, Smith with a hand-omo wallet, and Pie. Greenwood with a wristlet watch, Mr 11. Wilkins and .Mr F. Shaw also endorsed Mr Calland’s remarks. The singing of “Anld Lang Syne’’ brought a very pleasant, evening lo a (dose. The Poplar Flaxdressing Coy. are resinning operations on Wednesday. The cutters started on Monday last. Shannon is on the eve of a new era ill its history, and judging by the groups of prominent citizens in the market place yesterday engaged in solemn consultations, fully alive lo the importance of the occasion.
