Wellington, Last Night

At the Supreme Court, Herbert Eaton Kadcliffe, veeeutly chief clerk of the Mines .Deportment, was retried on charges of stealing £H)O and £35, (he property of the Government. The jury found prisoner guilty, and added the following rider to their verdict: “We recommend that the attention of the Public Service Commissioners be drawn to the need for better safeguards in dealing with public money (1) by requiring payees to write amounts in words when requiring receipts; (2) by making a regulation to the effect that certifying officers cannot operate on either imprest accounts or deposit accounts without the coun-ter-signature of another responsible officer.’’ PadchTl’e was sentenced to nine months with hard labour.
