THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF THE WAR.
OMEN-AIR MEETING. At (lie request of the Mayor (Mr JohnWJiryslall), an open-air meeting was held in front of the Town Hall on Saturday (‘veiling, at 7.3(1 o’clock, for the purpose of passing a mol ion sent out to all local bodies throughout the Dominion by the Frime AlitiPk'i', on tin* third anniversary of the war. There was a fair attendance. The proceedings wen; opened by a selection from the Borough Band. The Mayor Mum read the communication received from the Prime Minister, and delivered an address in which lie reviewed the events leading up to the war and the part the Empire had taken in defence of freedom and righteousness. He said there could be no peace until the enemy laid been driven back from the invaded territory. Tie referred to the sacrifices which had been made and which we would clu'cvl'nlly continue to make until a righteous peace was gained. He (lion read the following motion, which was seconded by Mr Kellow, and carried with applause: —“That on this the third anniversary of the declaration of a righteous war this meeting of citizens records its indexible determination (o continue to a victorious end the struggle in maintenance of those ideals of liberty and justice which are the common and sacred cause of the Allies.” The singing of the National Anthem concluded the proceedings.
