“N.Z. TABLET” ARTICLE
ALLEGED TO BE SEDITIOUS. REFERRED TO CROWN LAW OFFICE! A few days ago the member for Ashburton, Air Nosworthy, asked (lie Prime Minister in the House of Representatives whether his attention had been drawn to certain words used in an article published in the New Zealand Tablet on Thursday, July hlh, 1917, over the signature of “Edward Thomas, Bishop of Limerick”; and whether the Government would lake steps to prosecute the above-mentioned journal for sedition in this respect. Mr Massey has replied as follows : —“Such paragraphs as are referred to are ill-advised, and tend to encourage sectarian bitterness. They are therefore to ho deprecated, especially at a time like this, when all seel ions of the community should endeavour to present a united front to the common enemy. It is to lie remembered, though, that the paragraph has been quoted with approve,! by only one individual (the editor of the publication above quoted). I am confident there are not many who will agree with him. The question as' to whether this constitutes a seditious utterance will he referred to the Law Officers of the Crown.”
