BROTHEL-KEEPER SENT TO PRISON.
Dunedin, July 25. Ernest Sylvester Phillip Ebzery pleaded guilty in the Police Court this morning to a charge of keeping a house' of ill-fame at North-east Harbour. The magistrate, Mr Young, before the facts were stated, ordered the crowded court to be cleared. Chief-Detective Bishop said that the evidence gathered by the detectives revealed shocking facts, proving that, not only was the accused a brothel-keeper of the worst typo, but he Avas a procurer of girls. One Avas a mere girl of seventeen, ami another was a soldier’s wife, whose husband was now lighting in France. With the exception of these lavo, all the girls concerning Avhom the police laid evidence of their being at the house, were in respectable situation. One Avas formerly in accused’s employ, and fie obtained an evil influence over her, and she assisted him to procure fresh girls from amongst her Avprking companions. The Magistrate said that the accused Avas liable (o twelve months’ imprisonment, but as under life Military Service Act a man avlio served that term ceased to become a reservist, accused Avould, therefore, he .sentenced to eleven months’ imprisonment Avitli hard labour. The Magistrate considered that a suggestion that a tine would lie sufficient Avas out of the question.
