THE CHLOROFORM CASE.
Chrislchurch, Yesterday. ■ - The case of alleged chloroforming in the Clarendon Hotel in the small hours of blh duly was heard in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when William Kinnaird. aged ill), and Robert Irwin Meachlem, aged IM, were charged that with intent lo facilitate the commission of a crime they attempted to cause , Andrew Polio Guild and Maid Guild to he affected by chloroform. Mr Guild, who is a farmer at Temuka, said his wife awakened him at T>.2b a.m. lie noticed a very strong smell, which he pul down to chloroform. His wife was very much excited and alarmed, and partly dazed. He felt affected in (he lungs. He found a large handkerchief soaked with a solution lying between the pillows. Fvidence was given by Mrs Guild and others. The case is proceeding. John Oakley, warehouse assistant, stated that on 2ml July he sold accused Kinniard some chloroform. Accused said In* was a student. Both accused were committed for trial. Bail was refused.
