ALIEN SUBJECTS.
FIRM measures in regard to enemy alien subjects were advocated by Dr A. K. Newman in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. The Doctor said he had in mind the eases of two medical men. One was an Englishman and the other an Austrian. All of the latter’s relatives were lighting against Great Britain, The English doctor had gone to the. front, with the result that the Austrian doctor was receiving double pay. The Doctor also cited the ease of an Englishman who was fighting for the Empire, while a German was receiving double pay in his present employment. Dr Newman advocated non-combatant work for alien enemies. There were 250 on Somes Island and 250 at Alotuihi, and why should they not he put to work? Prisoners of war were put to work in Germany, and why. should these people be idle? Why
should they not be used for making public roads and public utilities? The public of New Zealand were getting very dissatisfied with the neglect of the alien question.
