THE COMMISSIONS.
Mr W. H. Field (Otaki) has asked the Minisier of Defence whether ho will, without delay, revise the system or absence of system, under which commissions are granted in the New Zealand military forces, with a view to making a better selection than has hitherto been the ease. Mr Field stales it is freely alleged that the present methods are quite unfair, and nuke in the direction of inefficiency, which may on the field of liallle result in disaster to the men who may have to submit, to he led by an incompetent and inexperienced officer. He contends that the chief test of a man’s qualifications for a commission should not ho that he has passed an examination, though this test should in most cases be applied, but that he has seen creditable active service, or has otherwise shown himself to be equipped with the necessary military knowledge and experience.
