MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the above was held on Tuesday. Present; Crs Sir James Wilson (chairman), W. E. Barber, W. J. Phillips, S. Penny, H. H, Hunt, H. Hammond. Cr Gray was absent owing to illness. The Palmerston Chamber of Commerce wrote, asking what am--mint of electrical power would be required in the Manawatn County if hydro-electrical power were established. The Council estimated that about 1,559 h.p. would he required. • , ■ Applications for alterations on Hie rate rod. were approved as follow:—L. Lovelock to Hartley and Sons, B. E. Johnston to E. Ohio, G. R. Nesbitt to Foxton Harbour Board. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT. The traffic was good for the month of Juno, and a credit balance of £139 is shown. The chief items of traffic were: Merchandise 225} tons, minerals 173 lons, (lax 4(5 trucks, timber-50,800 ft., metal 1,095 cubic yards; fares amounted to ft! 8s sd. ' On the night of the 15th nit. the following goods were removed from a truck at Rongotca : 1 ease cornflour, 2 hags sugar, 1 case hakerinc, 2 boxes raisins, 1 box candles, and 1 box sundries. The matter was placed in the hands of the police, hut no report has yet been received. The lineman at Rongotca was away from home that night. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Awahou Riding. —I have let a contract for carting metal on (he Foxlon-Shumion road to Mr Rotter for the sum of I.os, 11s, and 12s per yard respectively. I have let a contract for the erection of the stophank near the Shannon bridge to T. Bastin for the sum of f(i Is per chain. (Approved). General. —During last month the stone crusher crushed approximately I, cubic yards of metal, which has been delivered'at (he various sidings throughout the county. When Ci 1 Barber and myself were making a louring inspection of the roads and works in the Awahou riding wo mot a motor lorry and trailer loaded up with about 5 cubic yards of metal and travelling at a rale of 7 miles an hour. This new idea of hauling metal appealed to us as being suitable for county requirements, and I think the question of hauling road metal with, mol or lorries is well worthy of Ibis eonneil’s serious consideration.
