MANAWATU GORGE ROAD.
A large deputation representing many local bodies waited on the .Minister of Public Works at Wellington on Tuesday, and urged that, the Government should take over the Mariawatu Gorge road and bridge. In reply, the Minister said Ihe Gorge road was undoubtedly an arterial road, and the hulk of the revenue required for its maintenance should he provided by the owners of motor ears. Ho believed a lax on cars using the road would provide all the money uriduly required for its maintenance. The settlement of (he arterial road question depended on the passing of a Local Government Bill, ami there was no (diaaee of such it Bill being considered by Parliament in war time. He, believed the Government ought to .assist the local bodies in ihe maintenance of the Gorge road, and when he received the Commission’s report, he would place tho whole matter lie fore Cabinet. In reply to a question, the Minister said he would consider any request for permission to place a toll gale on (he road.
