THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
The hemp market continues very linn. The tonnage difficulty is not so acute at present as it was anticipated some lime ago it would be, the storage the sheds throughout the Dominion being relieved by some fairly large shipments —running into the vicinity of 10,01)0 hales —that have been made recently. The weather conditions during the past mouth or so, particularly in the' Auckland district, have not been favourable for milling, and as a con>o(pieuce the output-has lessened considerably. The prospects of the market are good, buyers being willing to contract for some time ahead. At a conference of Manila fibre merchants,, held at the War Office, it was intimated that the Imperial Government would take over all Manila fibre, merchants being excluded from buying'or selling except through the Government. The remuneration of the merchants for obtaining orders and dealing with documents will be about 10s per ton of business done. .
