Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 1917. BLAME THE GAS MANAGER.

SOAIETIMES local gas consumers make complaint about the quality or pressure ol the gas supplied, but taking everything into consideration Fox ton consumers have been, and are, well served. The manager is apt to get hauled over the coals by irate consumers lor a poor light, due to dirty or faulty fittings, over which he has no control. The following may be of interest from Nelson: —At the last meeting of the Nelson City Council, a letter was read from Air T. Eastcott, enquiring if the council would be willing to supply him with about six candlesticks and a few pounds of candles to supplement the so-called gas supply at the present time. On Thursday night it was impossible for him to see the labels on bottles in his shop without striking matches, which the council would admit was rather a serious thing in a chemist’s shop. The Gas Engineer said the trouble was probably due to the littings, which had previously needed attention. Councillor Carlisla said it was sheer nonsense to blame the littings for all the complaints. On Thursday night the gas was so thin that it would not burn, but just exploded. The Mayor said he had never had any trouble at his house. He would be glad if the Gas Engineer would explain, the cause of the failure of the supply on Friday evening. The Gas Engineer said there was not sufficient gas on Friday night to supply the town, and they had to reduce the pressure. That was due to defective retorts, and the old complaint of inadequate storage capacity. This week, working all the retorts, they were in a better’ position, and some gas had been run into the new holder. At times the gas certainly went off, but a large proportion of the complaints were found to be due to defective fittings and dirty burners.
