NOTED NEW ZEALANDER KILLED.
FROM COALMINER TO BRIGA-DIER-GENERAL. Christchurch, -lane 11, A private cable message states that Brigadier-Gen. C. H. G. Brown, a Canterbury and West Coast officcr, has been killed in action. General Brown, while a young' man, was ul Denniston, where he was engaged in coal-mining. He was a noted athlete, and won championships on the running track, lie joined the Denniston Bides, i.if which he became captain, and when war broke out he offered his services, and left for Egypt with the 13th North Canterbury and West Coast Regiment as captain. He was mentioned in despatches in November, 11)15, and awarded the D.S.O. On Gallipoli he was wounded by a bomb explosion, and wiis sent to England. When fully recovered he went to .France, and was promoted Colonel and subsequently became Brigadier-General. He was about 18--years of age, and leaves a widow, three sons and two daughters. Airs Brown, her two daughters and her youngest son live in Wellington, and the two elder sons are serving at the front,
