WOMAN MURDERED.
BLOAT STRUCK BY HUSBAND DURING QUARREL. Gisborne, June 10. A tragedy occurred to-night in Fox Street, where a Maori, named Abraham Te AA'horo, murdered his Avife, Charlotte, by striking her on the head with an axe. The murderer made good his escape, and so far has not been apprehended. The couple had boon quarrelling, to the neighbours' knoAvledge, for some days. The tragedy Avas Avitnessed by llieir little daughter, Miriam, aged eleven. She states that during a quarrel iu the kitchen her father rushed outside and got an axe. AAith this ho struck her mother. The Avornan died Avhile en route to the hospital. To AVhero at once departed, and Avhen the neighbours arrived in a feAV minutes there aviis no sign of him. The police are conducting an active search all oA’er the district. Te AVhero is a labourer, about fortylive years of age. Mrs Te AA hero Avas previously married. She leaves two grown-up daughters by her first; marriage, and two sons (all under eleven) by the second marriage. Latex*. Abraham Te AVhero, Avanted for the murder of his Avife on Sunday evening, Avas arrested in the avoolshed on John Machcll’s Awapuni property in the subni'bs of Gisborne this afternoon. He was A 7 ery cold and AA'el, having been out in the lieaA/v rain all night. The police noticed that he looked ill, but atti’ibuted this to exposure. lloAvever, about 0 o'clock it became apparent lhal something serious was the mailer, and the prisoner Avas removed to the hospital, where lie died at 8.20 p.m.
