MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
THE MONTHLY MEETING. The regular meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held at Sanson on Tuesday. Present. Crs Sir Janies Wilson (chairman) ,H. H. Hunt, B. Gray, W. E. Barber, J. S. Penny, W. J. Phillips and H. G. Hammond. * CORRESPONDENCE. The Alinistcr for Bands stated with reference to the road in Alakowhai Soldiers’ Settlement, that he could not consent to subsidise county expenditure on it. The Chairman reported lie bad interviewed Die Minister on the matter, and pointed out Dial Die Council never made roads out of rates. I’lie Slate Advances Office consented to a loan of £7OO for metalling Koputara road No. 2, and £2,000 for reconstructing bridges on Die Main Drain road. Foxton Harbour Board, Foxton and Palmerston Borough Councils, and Palmerston Chamber of Commerce, wrote agreeing that it was desirable the Government should continue tree planting on the sand dunes. Kairanga County Council forwarded copy of a resolution favouring an export lax in preference to the excess war, profits lax. —The Council disapproved of the export tax, FLOOD WATERS IN THE RIVER. Mr- G. Seifert wrote suggesting the loeal bodies through which The Aianawatu river system operated should hold a conference to arrange Dial a proper scheme of signalling Jloods and rising waters should be installed. (T. Barber under!ook to represent Die Council. He said the present system was no good at all. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT The traflic was good, and a credit balance of £123 !fs Id is shown for Die month. The chief items of traffic were; .Merchandise 34 : ; lons, grain 521 tons, ehaff 3(5 trucks, timber 34,200 ft., metal 825 cubic yards. Fares" amounted to £4 2s. The Supreme Court'sielion brought by Mr Moffall has been adjourned until August silting. Damaged Goods. —At Inched is a claim for damages to goods done by water getting through sheeted truck. Boi-al Bills. —The Local Bill in conned ion with Die tramway has. been deposited at the Courthouses at Bulls and Foxton, and the advertisement is at present running in newspapers. Expenses Royal Commission.The contribution to expenses in connect ion with Ibis matter have been agreed to, and most of Die money lias bin'll paid to Die Council. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Awabon Riding. —Mr H. Behrent has completed bis contract for delivering 248 yards of metal along Die Foxtoii-Shannon road, end another 300 yards of metal is required lo pul Die road in order. The recent Hoods in the Aianawatu river have scoured away the river bank towards the main road to such an extent that it may take away Die slop hank which 'was constructed al)oni 12 years ago to protect the main road. I have now surveyed another line for a new slop hank, and will commence Die work in a few days. Stone-crusher.- — Owing to Die showery weather experienced throughout lasi month, Die out put of crushed metal was not up lo the average, being only about 800 cubic, yards, and it will he necessary to continue crushing for some lime yet, as several hundred yards are required for Die Awahou and Kawa Kawa ridings. Cartage' of Metal. —As .requested by Die Council, 1 have worked out the actual cost of carting road metal by horse teams for each riding for year ending March 31st, IDI7 : —Satidon riding £lll. -Is, Ml. Stewart riding £41!) 2s, Wailohi riding £3.14 1.55, Rongotea riding £1(57 Os (id, Carnarvon £122 IDs (id, Kawa Kawa riding £-110 -Is (id, Awabon riding £357; Iota! cost, £1,002 5s Bd. The average cost of hauling mcial by horse power works mil from 0d to Is per yard per mik each way. and from information I have gathered about hauling metal with motor lorries, metal can be carted for about Or per yard per mile. I have some valuable information with reference to hauling road metal by motor lorries from practical county engineers which I am banding over |o Die Council for their consideration on Dio matter.
