TWO-UP.
Some time back Hr \V. H. .Field, M.P., brought under the notice of the Minister for Police the prevalence of two-up in the neighbourhood. Schools flourished, and certain parasites were living on tin; game Voting men, little more than youths, were enticed to these, schools, and taken down, it is a, very dillienlt task for the polk*e to gel. a conviction because the gamblers seek out-of-tlie-way places to carry on (heir nefarious operations. However, here is the Hinkler'' reply to onr member's letter; “Hear (Sir. —In fun he- reply to your letter of 28th March last;, relative to (he playing of two-up in the Fox-ton district, i beg to inform you that enquiries have been made by I lie police, but no evidence can be obtained (hat two-up is played in any place whereby a breach of tin l law is committed. Two-up is a ganm of chance, but it does not constitute an offence mile-" played in a public place or within view of persons in a public place, or in a common gaming bouse. As the law stands it is almost impossible to put a stop to the playing of the gam.' at sawmills, (lax nulls,, etc., which are on private property, unless the owners of the mills lake steps to prevent-'•it.’’ v Mr Field does not regard this replv as at all satisfactory,, assuming the information which lias reached him concerning the prevalence of two-up playing in the neighbourhood of Foxton is to he relied uoon.
