The Foxton police yesterday arrested a man named Frederick Chilcott, who is wanted on a commitment warrant to serve three-months imprisonment in default of the payment of a tine of £SO (is Od inflicted at the Taumarunui Magistrate’s Court in October last for keeping, liquor for sale. Chilcott had assumed the name of Frederick Buchanan, and was working at a tlaxmill in this district. This morning the tine was paid, and Chilcott was released.
In response to ,a notice sent out lo local bodies interested in the Manawatu Gorge Conunission lo meet the Mayor of Palmerston N. (Mr J. A. Nash), to consider the question of presenting a petition to the Commission praying' the Government to take over the Gorge road and bridges as a national undertaking, a large number of delegates attended. After some discussion, the meeting resolved to sign the petition; also to send out a supplementary petition to other local bodies not cited bv the Commission.
At a meeting of the local Druids’ Lodge, held last night, the following officers were elected for the ensuing term; —A. 1)., Bro. T. Chaffer; V.A., Bro. W. H. Currie; 1.G., Bro. J. Barker; 0.G., Bro. E. A. Martin; A.D.8., Bros. L. McCarthy and 11. Burnett; V.A.8., Bros. E. G. Martin and \V. Jane. At the conclusion of the business a progressive euchre tournament was held, Bro. E. A. Fuller winning first prize, and Bro. Fred. Whibley carrying oil’ the booby prize. The following proposals for appointment of teachers were made at the last meeting of the Wanganui Education Bodrd: .Stanway, during the war, Mr Alfred Sage; Hihitahi, during the war, Mr J. J. Farrelly; Main South Road, Mr C. W. Perrin; Kawautahi Road (new household school), Miss F, S. Grant; Whaka Road, Mr C. Haydon; Victoria Avenue, assistant, Miss E. M. Bell; Turakina, assistant, Miss O. M. Beamish; Foxton, acting assistant during war, M iss E. L, Hare promoted; Foxton, assistant, Mr A. G. Lancaster; Terrace End, pupil-teacher, Mr W. R. McNab, Bulls.
At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, judgment for plaintiffs was entered up in the following undefended civil eases :—Osborne and Smith v. P. E. Baldwin, claim £23 Is 3d, costs 235; H. Osborne v. W. Trask, £4l 18s !)d, costs 235; E. Osborne v. Kauri Hairuba, £(i 17s (id, costs 3(is Od, and J. E, Gillespie v. Maeana Wi Ilemera, £4 19s 7d, costs 20s. In tlie judgment summons case E. T. Sugden v. Leu Maugham there was no appearance of judgment debtor, and no excuse for absence, and an order was made for the payment of £4 17s 4d forthwith, in default seven days imprisonment in Wellington prison. L. Ashwin, who appeared on a judgment summons, was examined as to his earnings, after hearing which the Magistrate made an order for payment of £2 ss, overdue arrears on a previous order, forthwith, in default 14 days imprisonment in Wellington prison.
.Replying to a complaint from an Auckland lady (hat letters which she had sent to her soldier son in Erance had not been delivered before his death, the Minister of Defence says:—“l wish to assure you that everything possible is being done to ensure the regular and prompt delivery of correspondence to our men, but with the special circumstances existing at the front it is quite impossible to guarantee the delivery of every letter and parcel that may be forwarded. The work of delivering mails to men at the front is very hazardous, and in some instances mails, unfortunately, have been destroyed, as the result of the enemy's gunfire." Tin* letter adds that the Director of Army Postal Services, in a recent report, notified that he had arranger for the address of each letter to be noted on its arrival in London, and any change due to operations at the front is also registered, so that the letters may reach the men within a few days after arrival in England.

Mr A. J. Keliow has been appointed by the vicar of All Saints' Church as his warden for the ensuing year.
For using obscene language in a public place at Petone, William Craig- was fined £5 and 10s costs, with the alternative of fourteen days’ ■ imprisonment. The Queen of the South, from Wellington with general, arrived yesterday afternoon, and will sail again for Wellington with a cargo of hemp as soon as the weather permits.
At yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, when the case of alleged assault, James Harding v. W. Healey, was called, there was no appearance of complainant, and the case was accordingly struck out.
The first of a series of socials, under the auspices of the local Presbyterian Church, will be held in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening next, at 8 o’clock - . A capital programme of vocal and instrumental items will be submitted, and refreshments will be provided. Admission Is, children (id. The following live pupils of the New Zealand Flying School qualified for the Royal Aero Chib pilot certificate;—Henry L. Bayley, Okoroire; Trevor R. Bloomfield, Auckland; Ivo Carr, Fcilding; Arthur K, Cheal, Wanganui; Richard .1. Thompson, Fcilding. Twenty-live pupils have now qualified. Two local candidates are at the school, namely Messrs Stan Austin and Weston Barber.
