WEBB’S SENTENCE.
P. C. Webb, M.P., was sentenced at • Christchurch on Tuesday to three months' imprisonment for seditions utterance. He was ably defended bv Sir John Findlay.
Webb will not lose his seat as a member id! Parliament in consequence of his conviction. Section 30 of the Legislature Act: lays it down that a member loses his seat if he is “convicted of any crime punishable by death or by imprisonment with hard labour for a term of two years or upwards.” finder the War Regulations Act the offence of seditious utterance is punishable by imprisonment for a term not exceeding twelve months. Up to the time that Parliament sits Webb will receive his honorarium at the rate of £31)0 a year. After Parliament opens the question of granting him leave of absence will arise. "Leave of absence" is usually granted for urgent private or public reasons, and without such leave the member is subjected to a deduction from his honorarium of £1 a day. What view tiie House will lake remains to be seen.
