Latest report; Everything going well. » « ’ * ■* The various sub-committees in connection with the forthcoming carnival to be held on the Pox ton racecourse on Monday; Juno 4th, are working energetically. Last night a meeting of'the Athletic Committee was held, with Mr Claris in the chair. The following events were decided upon:—Boys races, 100 yds. and 220 yds. (for boys from 10 to 15 years), first prize 7s Od, second 2s fid; entry (id. 100 yds. and 200 yds. for men, iirsl and second prize trophies, entry Is; married women's race, 50 yds., first and second prize trophies, entry free; girls' race, 10 to 15 years, 50 yds., first prize 7s fid, second 2s fid; egg and spoon race, 50 yds., first and second prize trophies, entry Is; potato race, 50 yds., first and second prize trophies, entry Is; chain stepping, first 7s (id, second 2s (id, entry Is; pillow light on boom, prizes trophies, entry Is; slow bicycle race, prizes trophies, entry Is; Ing-oJ-war, sixaside, first prize one guinea, second half a guinea, entry 3s per team; motor car spearing potato competition, prizes trophies, entry 2s (id; motor car tilling at the ring, Jii’st prize 10s, entry 2s (id.
The foot races are to be controlled by Messrs McMurray, .1. Ross, Oa bites and Hornbiow; Messrs O’Brien, Woods and Ball were appointed to take charge of chain stepping, pillow light and slow bicycle race; Mr Preston the tug-of-war, and Messrs Symons, .). Smith and Crowley the motor car events.
The following have donated prizes in connection with the above: Messrs G. H. Symons £1 Is, Smith, Hornbiow and Claris 10s each, Rev. Raine trophy. Messrs Hanlon and Claris were appointed to canvass for trophies.
Mr Jackson and the Stale school children are booming the produce stall, and donations and gifts arc being promised good-oh! * * * *
The bran tub committee, Aliases K. and S. Barber, McMurray and Hawke, are going to lip the beam in bran tub mysteries for the kiddies. They are pothering in all sorts of prizes, and the juvenile investors will receive good value lor their money.
The stewards of Hie local .Racing Club are sports, every one, and be it known by these presents that they are in charge of the horse events at the Carnival. They met last night in solemn conclave, and, gee whiz! the enthusiasm ami smoke! They drew up a, programme of events Which alone will provide a day’s wport. -No half-measures about this committee, with Mr W. E. Barber at. the head. The Club has also given the handsome donation of £25 to the funds, 'Che events they have provided are worth contesting, and are full of interest to the public.
Now, what about the ladies? Judging by the blocking of the telephone service, something is doing. Mesdam.es Jus, Robinson, McMurray, W. Barber and Renton are providing luncheon and afternoon lea on the day of the Carnival, lit for the gods. * ■* * *
We are glad to report that Miss AVoodroofe has undertaken the management of the sweet stall. The quantity and quality of the sweets is going to be beyoyd reproach. The Secretary would be glad to acknowledge gifts of sweets, money or sugar for this stall. The gifts may be given to him or to Miss Woodroofe.
The procession ought to be the most spectacular event of the day. It would he a regrettable thing it' it bore a “moulting” appearance. Owners of junior ears, evades, jinnies, drays, carls, gigs, can assure the success of the procession by decorating their vehicles. May we suggest greenery, bunting, or ribbon as a means of decoration. * * * * Don’t think of- the weather, and then predict a bad day; think of the Carnival and how to make it a success. There is room for an effort by everyone. Every little helps. i * * * dowers gorgeous flowers plants, ferns. Visit the stall presided over by Mrs A. S. Easton, and spend your money. The fad that Mrs Easton is responsible for this stall is a criterion of its success. Who knows more about llowers than Mrs Easton.’’ * * » * Mrs John Kobinson has kindly undertaken the responsibility of the decorated events. She will be glad to receive trophies as prizes. Enter your ear, bikes, traps, in these classes. Help her to make it a success. ■» -A- % ‘-* 1 What good news! The Eoxton Ivacing Club has donated £25 to the funds of the Carnival. Many thanks to them. Is there anyone prepared to follow their example? The Secretary is eager to write out more receipts! * 5* * * There are rumours of even timers and visions of athletic aspirants sprinting home after dark. Mr J. district. Magnificent prizes for this event for the winning team. * * . * *
Dorrt forget the object of the Carnival. It is ALL for the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund. No salaries are being paid. All are working as a work of love. THE CONCERT’. There is bound to be a crowded house at the concert in the Town Hall in the evening. In this connection the Committee has been in communication with Mrs C. Louisson, of Palmerston N. This lady is known throughout the province not only as one of our most talented vocalists, but as an organiser of musical entertainments responsible for the raising of a considerable sum of money for patriotic purposes. Mrs Louisson’s “All Black” concert parly took Palmerston, Feilding, and Wanganui by storm. Anyhow, Mrs Lonisson is going to assist Foxton. and although some of her performers have left the district, she is arranging to bring down a party. Further particulars will he published in This connection later. The tickets for the concert are now in the secretary's hands for sale. There will lie no reserved seats at (he concert, hut -those possessing tickets will be allowed in the hall a quarter of an hour earlier.
