PUBLIC MEETING.
CARNIVAL ARRANGED FOR KINGS' BIRTHDAY.
The public meeting, convened by the local Patriotic .Society and held last night, Avas very Avell attended by both sexes. The Mayor (Mr J(dm Chrystall) occupied the chair, and briefly explained that the meeting Avas convened for the purpose of considering the question of holding 1 a carnival and sports meeting on the King’s Birthday in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The carnival held previously in aid of the same fund had been a very great, success, and the Society felt that it would he a fitting Avay to celebrate the birthday of our Sovereign. A provisional programme had been draAvu up in order to stive (he time of the meeting, and this could eilher he adopted in its entirety or altered and amended as I he meeting thought tit. It was moved that the suggestion of the Patriotic Society to hold a carnival and sports meeting lie approved, and that same to held on the racecourse on the King’s Birthday. An amendment was moved that the carnival he held on June 23rd, Prince of Wales’ Birthday, in order that more time Avould he available for making all arrangements and also that :is (he Olaki races are to he held on Ihe King's Birthday it Avas contended that this would in some measure interfere with the attendance at the carnival, particularly from (he surrounding district. On being put to the meeting, the King's Birthday was decided upon by a large majority. The following sports programme adopted;—Horse events. —Horse and pony jumping, potato spearing, walking, trolling and galloping- race, tilting at the ring, tug-of-war, Avreslling,
apple*bobbing, threading the needle, and ladies' and geiijs’ gig (having compel it ions. Athletic events. —100 yds. and 22(t yds. Hat races for boys under lb, lilt) yds, and 220 yds, (hat races for men, women's race bit vds.,
girls’ race, under lb, b() yds., chain stepping, obstacle races for boys and men, pillow light on boom, egg and spoon race, tug-of-war, b aside. slow bicycle race, potato race, motor car potato spearing competition, blindfolded race (lady driving gentleman).
Miscellaneous. —Decorated vehicles of all kinds, side shows, shooting gallery, refreshments, sweets, produce and llower stalls.

it was decided to hold a procession, starling from the Council Chamber a! JO o’clock, and to offer prizes for decorated vehicles of all kinds.
Admission to the ground was lixed at one shilling for adults and three pence for children.
