HEAVY TRAFFIC.
TO BM STOPPED IN MAIN STREET. BETWEEN W 1.1 ARE STREET AND RAVENSWORTH PLACE. At last night's Council meeting- Cr Henderson moved, and Cr Stevenson seconded, that all heavy trallic as defined by the Public, Works Act, i!)08, ami its amendments, and all Max, low, and libre trallic shall not proceed between Wharf Street corner and Ravens worth Place by way of Main Street. The move)- said it had cost a good deal of money to make Main Street as good as it was at present, and an effort should be made to keep it good. At present heavy trallic was going by way of Main Street which could he diverted to .Johnston Street without any inconvenience, and the Council should prevent the heavy loads being carried along 'Main Street. Cr Stevenson also was of opinion that Main Street should be closed to heavy (rathe. He had seen heavily laden motor lorries use Main Street who) it was really nearer for them to go by way of ■Johnston Street. Cr Walker said he would support the motion if the Council had Hie power to prevent them using Main Street. Cr M.c Murray said -Johnston Street was in had order, and asked if it was suitable for the heavy trallic. It wiis a question as to which street was better able to stand the trallic and would be cheapest in the matter of upkeep. Cr Bryant contended that t,lieweight of loads in Main Street should be restricted, and the use of small tires with heavy loads prevented. .Johnston Street was quite capable of taking all the heavy trallic, and should be used for the purpose. Cr Coley didn't think the Council should restrict the loads provided the heavy trallic kept off Main Street, Cr Hurley and the Mayor also supported the motion, which on being put was carried unanimously.
