SEVENTH BALLOT.
8,530 MEN CALLED UP. LIST OE FOXTON AND DISTRICT NAMES. A Gazette Extraordinary issued on Tuesday contained the result of. tin' seventh ballot taken under the Military Service Act from among members of the First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve to till vacancies in the 31st Reinforcements, mobilising two months hence. The shortage which has to be made good is 1,700, but 8,530 names have been drawn. This big drawing is accounted for partly by the greater number of vacancies existing and partly by. the fact that, owing to the tightening up of the medical regulations rendering a smaller number of fit recruits available, Jive men have been drawn for every recruit required. In the sixth ballot the proportion was four to one, and in previous ballots three to one. The numbers of men drawn in the various ballots to dale have been Is follow: — Ist Ballot. Nev., 1010 4000 2nd Ballot, Dec.. ,1!)10 3000 3rd Ballot, .Jan., 1017 3,000 41 h Ballot (double), Feb., ’l7 0367 slh Ballot, March 1017 4503 oth Ballot, April, 1017 4812 7th Ballot, May, 1017 8530 Total ....35,312 Li the seven ballots taken up to the present, therefore, 35,312 members of the First Division have been called ii]) to till some 10,200 vacancies in tin 1 23rd, 24th, 251 li, 20tb, 27til, 281 h, 201 h. 301 li and 31sl Reinforcements. The Division originally contained 84,080 names; but, in addition to the reduction by ballot, there has been a considerable reduction'by voluntary enlistment. At. the conclusion of the oth Ballot, on 12(h April, the total number remaining in (he Reserve was 48,004. This number has now been further reduced by the 8,530 men called up in the 7(h Ballot and the voluntary enlistments since 12th April, The total number now remaining is therefore below 35,000, seeing that at least 000 First Division recruits have answered the call voluntarily. Tim asterisk against any name signifies previous voluntary enlistment :
