Oar Palmerston evening contemporary follows our line of argument in respect to the Eoxton train service. The follo’wing article appeared in Tuesday’s issue:— “The Railway Department’ seems to be adopting a particularly perverse policy in regard (o the curtailed Eoxlon train service. Under the restricted arrangements, trains from mid to Eoxton only run on three days a week. The reasons advanced are the necessity for econojiiv of staff and coal. The service
thus given is most inconvenient
both for Palmerston und Eoxton, and strong represenlations have been made to the Department upon Ibe subject by the Eoxton Borough Connell, which desires that a single service lie run daily instead of a double service three limes a week - . Nothing came of (bis, however, ex-
cept a refusal lo accede to l.lu; request ;md on :i]>iH‘:il lo 1 he public lo * bear (lie inconvenience' “without complaint in view of: the needs oT the Umpire.” N’o otic desire,', to increase the dillicnllies of the |)cpartmenl, but at the same time there seems lo be little in its plea that tin; present arrangement results in economy. The same amount of coal would be used in a daily single service that is now consumed in the tri-weekly double service, and the same si aIT is required Tor both. Ko.xton people claim that, not only is the present service more costly than the one they desire, but they
point out that it is imposing' great loss and inconvenience! upon business people, residents and school children. A train leaving Foxton in the morning and returning there from Palmerston in the evening' would remove* (lie very serious disability that is now imposed on (he public, and it would at the some time ensure those economies that are demanded by the Department, as it would still mean a curtailment of the service by one-halt', surely a heavy enough sacrifice for one community. A public meet iny ,will be held at Foxton to protest against the restrictions and ask tor a more reasonable arrangement. It would be well il' some support were, given the Foxton people from Palmerston since the interests of both places are identical in the matter."
