SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTION.
The annual meeting of householders for the purpose of electing a School Committee for the ensuing year and to receive the report and balance-sheet for the past year, was held in the school last night. At 7.30 p.m. there were only about six persons present, principally members of the old Committee. ' The indifference displayed by the householder's was very severely criticised by those present. Shortly before 8 p.m. one or two of those present left for the purpose of going into the highways and by-ways for the purpose of gathering in some wanderers, and finally there was an attendance of fifteen. Mr Ilornbiow was elected chairman. The following is a digest of the annual report and balance-sheet: — At the householders meeting last year the following committeemen were elected: .Messrs Rev. Bredin, Dr. jMandl, Betty, Ilornbiow, Perreau, Me Murray, Hussey, Wood*, and MeColl. Mr Ilornbiow was elected chairman, and Mr McMiirray secretary. Eleven meetings were held during the year, and the attendances of committeemen, on the whole, was satisfactory. At the beginning of the year there was a
credit balance of £2 (is, and the year (dosed with a credit of £2 Is lOd. The receipts totalled £ll4 Os Bd, which included capitation grunt £B7 2s, £lO 10,- od subsidy from Department, half cost of carrying out ventilation improvements to several of the class-rooms, and £l.l 7s proceeds of an entertainment for (he purpose of providing half cost, of a hot water service at the head teacher’s residence, agricultural Hasses and donations making up the balance. The expenditure totalled £lll 18s Kid. The principal items of expenditure were: Caretaker £3O 12s, fuel £7 1 (is 4d, sanitation £8 10s, repairs, etc., £0 8s Id, improvements £2l (is 7d (ventilation), school stationery £4 Os (id, agricultural (lasses £L 0s 3d, voluntary contributions paid to Hoard for subsidy-earning purposes (school teacher’s residence) £ll 7s, stamps, bank account and cheque book, etc., £2 12s Bd, disinfectant £1 13s Od, sundries £3 13s Bd. As will be noticed from the above, £2l (is 7d was expended on improved class-room ventilation, which has proved a great boon to scholars and teachers alike in hot weather. The ventilation throughout the school is now satisfactory, and will enable class-rooms to be hushed with fre-h air during (he sultry weather. The Committee is still heavily taxed for sanitation purpose.-, and (hiring the year an estimate was obtained for the construction of a septic lank, but it was found that this method would entail too great an expense (£130). Also a great drawback to the scheme was insullieient water supply. The incoming commit tee is recommended to again apply to the Borough Council for a grant in aid of the sanitation payment. An estimate was obtained from Mr Xve
as to cost of providing - a concrete path and assembly. An anonymous donor forwarded a cheque for £2O towards cost of this work. As soon as a lender is received for carrying out this work application will he made to the Department, through the .Board, for £ for £ subsidy on the generous donation. The Com-
mittee has carried out minor repairs to the building', etc., during the year. At the suggeslion of the Committee, the staff and children organised an effort in aid of the naval dependent.-- fund, and as a result £95 Ids was raised and forwarded to the Crime Minister and duly aekonwledged. The annual examination disclosed that the work of the school continues satisfactory. The Committee lias not been called upon to settle any differences between parents and stall'. The thanks of the Committee are tendered to all who have in any way assisted to promote tho welfare of the school and the well-being of the children. The Chairman elaborated several matters in connection with the report and balance-sheet. After which they were adopted.
There were ten nominations for the nine vacancies, and the following were elected: Messrs Rev. J. IL Brecliu, Hornhlow, Betty, Ale. Murray, Perreau, Hussey, Woods, S. Head and J. Parker.
Votes of (hanks were passed to the head teacher and staff, the auditor (Mr A. J. Kellowj, outgoing Committee, and the caretaker, Mrs Me Knight. Mr Jackson, head teacher, responded on behalf of the teaching stall' and himself, ami referred to the hearty co-operation of the Committee in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the school and the goodwill which existed and the assistance of the parents. In referring to the Kev. Brediu’s eulogistic remarks following a visit to the school, Mr Jackson suggested that the Committee should institute a parents' day, whereby an opportunity would be afforded parents of seeing the school at work.
The new Committe met after the householders’ meeting, and Mr Hornhlow was re-elected chairman, and Mr McMurray secretary. It
