SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The last meeting of the local State School Committe as at present constituted, was held on Tuesday night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty, McMurray, Hussey, Perreau and Woods. It was reported that owing to lack of labour arrangements in reference lo construction, footpath and assembly were not any further forward, and it was decided to ascertain whether the contractors undertaking concrete work at the gas works would carry out the work. The Secretary reported that be had written a letter of thanks to the donor of £2O for the carrying out of this work.
Correspondence was read from the Board stating that the cost of installing hot water service at the head teacher's residence was £2O 15s Id. towards which the Committee contributed £ll 7s (proceeds of concert), upon which the Department granted a £ for £ subsidy, leaving a balance to he returned to the Committee of £1 18s lid. The Board asked for particulars of the work upon which the balance was to be expended. The Chairman said the Committee had been a little too generous in their contribution, as the Board bad got off without paying anything. He understood that nothing had been allowed the Committee on the old stove. What the Commiltee should have done was to have (contributed one quarter of the cost and allowed the Board and Department to pay flic balance. It was resolved lo communicate with with the Board on the subject, 'flu* Chairman stated that he had sanctioned a holiday for Auzac, Day. Mr Woods said a half-holi-day would have been sufficient, as Ihe children wanted as much time as possible for their studios. The Chairman's action was endorsed.
The head teacher's report stated that owing to an epidemic of measles there had been a falling-off in attendance. The fences required attention, and a new tine erected over stove in (lie teachers’ room. It was resolved to instruct the head teacher to-purchase timber required for fencing 1 , and to allow the senior boys to effect the repairs. Resolved to apply to the Board for a new (hie for stove in teachers’ room. It was resolved that the Committee meet at 7.15 p.m. on Monday, to peruse annual report.
