NEWS IN BRIEF.

For durability and absolute safety, feiTo-coucrete —to give it its proper name —is without rival. It is also economical, now that steel is such a vital question to the European Powers. And steel, of course, lias hitherto figured largely in shipbuilding. The Port of London Authority, who are erecting a canteen for 300 men in connection with their main dock extension at Tilbury, have decided that no intoxicants shall be sold, but that the light beers and stout approved by the Central Control Board shall be supplied. The Central Powers, determined that the new kingdom of Poland shall have everything handsome ahout it, are going to provide it with a new National Anthem. Accordingly, at the suggestion of the higher authorities, the Philharmonic Society of Warsaw is offering a valuable prize for words and music. Before economical methods of making match-boxes were discovered, it was the custom to have matches made from small blocks of wood. The lower end of the block was not cut apart, and thus the whole bunch of matches was held together. For many years this form of match was sold all over the United Slates. Even to this day one finds the block match in wide use along the Pacific Coast.
