A CONVERT TO PROHIBITION.
The Dunedin Star t]ms concluded a leading article in a recent issue : “Let us clear the air. We have never, previously advocated Prohibition, but find ourselves forced along that line by the almost criminal neglect and pusillanimity of the Government in relation to this and other kindred questions, and by the remarkable result of the experiment in other lands and in our own Nolicense districts. It is intolerable that this small community. should squander four and a-half millions sterling per annum in drink at any time, but especially now, and that valuable food products should be diverted to its manufacture. We are at war, and this is the time for heroic deeds and drastic remedies. The injurious luxuries of the people —drink among the most potent of them — are steadily draining the resources of the country, while men and women are suffering from high prices and straitened conditions of living. It is a time for courageous statesmanship, and not for timeserving politics. \\ e repeat our opinion that the first public man who makes National Prohibition the outstanding plank in his platform will sweep the polls at the next general election. We shall not cease to focus the attention of our reader’s upon the facts relating to this burning question.”
