HERO UNDER TWO FLAGS.

FOUGHT FOR AND AGAINST THE TURKS.

One of the most romantic stories of the Avar centres round Herbert Gerald Montagu, a private in the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, formerly a lieutenant in the Royal Munster Fusiliers, who has died in action.

Mr Montagu, Avho avus formerly a subaltern in the Royal Fusiliers, avus deprived of his commission for joining the Turkish Army in Tripoli Avithout leave.

He foughtthe Turco-ltalian War in 1911, and was decorated by the Sultan with the Orders of the Mejidieh and Nichanlillftikhar (!) for conspicuous bravery in the field. At the conclusion of the Tripoli campaign he returned to England, and Avas presented Avith an illuminated address on behalf of the Moslem community of Great Britain. As lieutenant in the Royal Munster Fusiliers he took part in the Suvla Bay landing and in other Gallipoli operations, Avas wounded at Kislagh Dagh, and returned to England in September, 1915, suffering from septic Avounds and nervous breakdown:. Owing to his illness he resigned his commission, but immediately he Avas fit he joined the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry us a private, Avent to France, and there met his death at the age of 24.
