PRISONER ESCAPES.

FROM TERRACE GAOL. COX-YICT STILL AT LARGE. A prisoner succeeded in effecting his escape from the Wellington Terrace gaol early on Saturday morning, and he is still at large. Exactly how he managed to get away is not yet known, but it is surmised that he sueeeeded in making his way to a wall, and climbed over it. His absence was not immediately noticed. Subsequent inquiries disclosed that he was seen at Brooklyn by some residents about 7 o’clock, and it must have been some time before that hour that he got away. It appears that the man was able to change his prison garb soon after leaving the prison. Exactly how this was accomplished has not yet come out. A rumour was current yesterday that he stuck up a man and forced him to part with his coat.

The runaway prisoner is John Dome, who was sentenced to live years’ imprisonment in August last year for assaulting a girl. He succeeded in avoiding arrest for this offence for live years. By occupation he was a labourer. He is described as being 40 years of age, sft. Sin. in height, with dark complexion, dark brown hair, and grey eyes. He has a small scar on the forehead over the right eye.
