FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING,

A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last night to receive applications for the position of office assistant, and general. There were present: The Alayor (Air Alf. Fraser), and Crs. McColl, Henderson, Bryant, Stevenson and Thompson. GAS WORKS. The following recommendations from the Gas Works Committed were adopted: —“That the fireman at the gas works tie granted an increase in wages of 5s per week; and that the price of tar sold to the Alaintenance Account be sixpence per gallon. FIKEBELL. The Public Works Committee, after inspecting the lirebell structure, recommended that same he taken down and re-erected on the site already selected. The report was adopted. TRANSFER OF FUNDS. As the Government Audit Ollice insists on all local body loan accounts being in credit at the end of the financial year, it was decided that £3O be transferred from the General Account to the Hoads and Streets Loan Account, and £412 from the General Account to the Gas Works Loan Interest Accounts to put these accounts in credit. HO WAN ST REET. A letter was read from Air H. Hand, drawing attention to the very had state of llowau Street, and also to the quantity of noxious weeds on the properties in that locality. The Alayor said that Ho wan Street was a very long street, and would cost, a good deal of money 1,0 pul in order. It was only used by about two rate-payers. He agreed that it was the duty of the Council to improve the condition of same, hut this could not he done at present, as they were short of money. In reference to the noxious weeds, the Inspector was in Foxton a few days hack, and the Town Clerk drew his attention to same, and final notices were to he served on the offenders to have the Aveeds grubbed out. ROADMEN’S WAGES.

The borough roadmen applied for an increase in wages of one shilling per day. in reply to a question by a Councillor, the .Mayor said that at present the wages were: foreman 10s, and the other two men Os, wet and dry. The mailer was dealt with in committee, and on resuming business the following motion was curried : —Proposed by Cr. Thompson, seconded by Cr. Bryant, that the surfacemen employed by the borough be granted a war bonus of one shilling per flay for the duration of the war and six months after, and that they be asked to put a little more energy into the work. OFFICE ASSISTA N'T.

There were two applications for tin* position of office assistant, which were dealt wilii in committee. Jt was decided on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Bryant, that Mrs .Jennings be appointed at. a salary of ,C 52 per annum.
