4,503 MEN CALLED (,T. ■ The result of the Jifth ballot, taken under the Military Sendee Act from among members of the Ist Division of the Expeditionary Eoree Reserve for the purpose of filing the gaps in the 20th Heinforeemenls, mobilising in May next, was issued in the form of a Gazette Extraordinary. The vacancies have been caused by the failure of voluntary recruiting to produce the required number of men, the actual shortage for the draft being 1,50.1. To meet this, 4,503. have been called up, the purpose of drawing three men for every vacancy to be tilled being to allow suflieieid margin for exemptions on various grounds and rejections on account of medical unfitness. The numbers of men drawn in the various ballots to date have been as follow: — .Ist Ballot, Nov., .1010 4,000 2nd Ballot Dec., .1010 3,000 3rd Ballot, Jan., BUT 3,000 4th Bal. (double), Feb., 1017 0,807 sth Ballot, March, 10.17 4,503 » Total 21,070 In the live ballots that have already taken place, 21,070 members of the .Ist Division have thus been ' ealled it]) to till some 7,300 vacancies in the 23rd, 241 h, 25!h, 20th 27th 2Sth and 20lh Reinforcements. The Ist Division, which originally totalled 84,080 men, lias now been considerably drawn upon hy voluntary enlistment. At the conclusion of the fourth ballot, on 7th February, the total number remaining in I he Reserve was 50,052. This number has now been further reduced hy the 4,503 men called up in I ho tilth hallo! mid the voluntary enlistment of Ist Division men since 7(h February.
