GAS WORKS.
MANAGER'S REPORT. The manager of the municipal gas works reported at last night s Council meeting as follows: “I have received the ironwork for the second gas holder, and have put in the necessary connecting main at the works, ready to place the supply pipes iu position when the contractors start on the concrete work. Our supply of coal is keeping up fairly well, hut owing to a variation in the class of coal received, the coke produced, while oi a good class for household use, is not quite suitable for suction gas generators. The stock of coke on hand is too bulky with the yard at present full of other material. 1 have an offer at 20s per ion for all we hold at the yard, and would recommend selling at this price. The carbonising plant is working well, and has not given any trouble for months past. The attention which has to be given to the producing plant and works renders it necessary to be on duty much longer hours than a liremau usually works. In order to comply with a request and to establish a more permanent position, I ask you to favourably consider making an advance of 5s per week in our stoker’s wages. It is to our advantage that wo encourage a, healthy, capable man to settle in the works till he becomes thoroughly acquainted with the details of gas making.
