REDUCTION IN PRICE OF GAS.

PROMOTES INCREASED CONSUMPTION. An interesting statement Avas made by the Mayor at last night’s Borough Council meeting in connection with the consumption of gas before and since a reduction to consumers was made. The Mayor said when the proposal to reduce the cost ’of gas was made objections were brought forward. It had been proved that the step taken was a wise one, as the following figures would show; in 1015 the nett price of gas for lighting Avas 10s per 1,000 ft., a- against 0s 2d for cooking, etc., now 7s (id per 1,000 ft. and over, as against 7s (id per 1,000 ft. and (is 3d over that quantity, as at present. The number of consumers prior to the reduction was 270, since 332, gas cookers 36 and 75, grillers 22 and 36 respectively; 3,315,000 ft. Avas the consumption prior to the reduction and 4,770,200f1. since, while the cash received for gas sales were £1,502 13s 7d and £1,077 Is 4d. The Mayor said that the reduction, instead of decreasing the output, had had (he opposite effect, lie would like (he Council to instill gas rings without cost to consumers. Such a, concession would well repay the Council.
