FIXED 15 AND COSTS FOR SEDITIOUS UTTERANCE. Auckland, Feb. 27. At the Police Court to-day a, young Catholic priest, the Rev. Father John Arthur Roche, Avas charged Avith a seditious utterance —to Avit ; “The Germans are a hotter civilised nation than the British. You are a fool to go to war." lie pleaded guilty. Chief-Deteelive Mac.Mahoa stated that on Monday evening a soldier was in conversation with a friend in a hotel in the commercial room when the defendant came in and was drawn into conversation on Irish politics, conscription, and the Australian referendum. The defendant subsequently said he avus an Australian and avus ignorant that it avus an offence against the hiav as it Avas no offence in Australia to give utterance to such a sentiment. He had no disloyal intent. Father Holbrook, in reply to the Bench, said lie knew the defendant. avlio regretted using the Avords and was desirous of returning to Australia. The Magistrate said it Avas not a case for imprisonment, as the words were not used in a public place and the circumstances did not slioav any serious intention of Avrong- doing. A fine avou ld he imposed of £5 and costs.
