JOFFRE’S DESIRE.
HIS TWO AMBITIONS
The Petit Parisien says that on the left hank of the Seine there is a large pinnaee with its sides tarred black, which has . been anchored there since the first months of the war. There is nothing to distinguish it, from the other vessels. The interior is most comfortably fitted up and includes, besides a kitchen and private cabins, a large saloon aft, a dining-room, and two bedrooms, a workroom and a library. Forward there is a small saloon and smoking-room looking out on the sheltered terrace.
No name is painted on the pinnace, yet everybody knows it should be named Le Cygne (the Swan), and that after its long rest; it will perhaps leave on an early day, according to the wish of the proprietor. For it must be taken into account that its proprietor is Marshal Joffre, who said in August last when receiving a number of press correspondents: —“l have two ambitions. One is to win the final battig and the second is to retire on a boat which will navigate the magnificent rivers of France.”
