WATERSIDERS’ DISPUTE.

The Conciliation Council is occupied with a claim Jiled by the shipping companies against the N.Z, Watersiders’ Union and the Auckland Watersiders’ Union in respect of the conditions of labour on the water front. The employers’ claim is practically identical with the expiring award, claims for higher pay and easier working conditions having been made by the watersiders. A. conference was held, but the parties failed to agree. The Watersiders’ Unions did not appoint assessors, and the commissioner appointed a representative of the workers in that capacity. The Commissioner adjourned the dispute at the request of the union assessors to enable them to become fully conversant with their task.
