DEATH OF SIR GEORGE McLEAN.

Dunedm, Feb. 17. The death is announced of Sir George McLean, M.L.C.

Sir George McLean was horn at Klgin in Scotland in 1834. In 1852 he arrived in Melbourne, where he entered the Oriented Bank. In 1807 he was appointed manager of the Maid: of New Zealand at Dunedin, and subsequently entered into private business. Ho entered the Provincial Council, and later represented Waikouiti in Parliament, sitting for ten years, lie sat in the Vogel and Aatkinson Cabinets ns Post-master-General, and for some time chairman of the Colonial Bank, He was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1881. Sir George McLean was closely identified with the inauguration of the Union Shipping Co., of which lie was a, director. Mrs T, M. Wilford, of Wellington, is a daughter of deceased.
