FLAX PLANT GRUB.
Some time ago we stated that a grub was attacking the flax roots and killing the plants in certain flax areas. Mr W. H. Field, M.P., writes as follows on the subject, and also encloses a letter in reply from the Minister of Agriculture:—“Until I saw your paragraph I was not aware of the existence of this second [the other pest is a fly which attacks the blades] insect pest on our flax. 1 have discussed the matter with Mr Cockayne, the Government biologist, and he tells me that the grub has been known for a number of years, and that its ravages are particularly severe in dry seasons, when it gets at the roots of the plants and kills them off in huge numbers. He thinks that the most badly affected flax areas are on the Palmerslon-Foxton line, and that this land is fortunately eminently suited for dairying if disaster should happen to the (lax." The following letter, under date February stb, has been received by Mr Field from the Minister of Agriculture; —“Dear Sir. —d have to acknowledge the receipt of your let - ter of the 2nd instant, enclosing a (dipping from the Manawatu Herald regarding an insect pest which is attacking the llax plants in the Manawatu district; and, in reply, beg to state that 1 shall be very pleased to submit the matter to my officers for report, and to communicate with you later.”
