FOURTH BALLOT.

The result of the fourth ballot laken under tin 1 Military Serviee Act from among memliers of the First Division of the Fxpeditionary Foi’ce Reserve for the purpose of tilling vaeaneies in the 271 h uml 2Slh Keinforeemenls, being mobilised in Mareh nnd April next respectively, was issued in tin; form of a Gazette Fxlraordinary on Tuesday mommy. The vamineies have been caused by I lie failure of voluntary recruitmg to produce the required number of men. totalling 422 in (he 271 h Ueinforeenients and 1 :i(>7 in the 28lb. The combined shortage is thus 2,25!1. To meet this 1i,8(i7 men have been called up, the purpose in drawing the extra number being to allow a sufficient margin for exemptions on various grounds and rejections on account of medical unfitness. The numbers of men drawn in the various ballots to date have been as follows: —■ Ist Ballot .. .. 4.000 2nd Ballot . . . . 8.000 3rd Ballot . . . . 3,000 4th Ballot (double) .. 0,807 Total .. .. 17,407 In the four ballots that have already taken place. 17,407 members of the First Division have thus been called up to till some 5,800 vacancies in the 23rd, 24th, 25th, 20th, 27th, and 281 h l{eiuforcements. As the membership of the First Division also is being steadily depleted by the voluntary enlistment —it originally comprised 84,080 men—it will be seen that this class 7-, already more than one-quarter exhausted. The fourth ballot differs from the previous ones, inasmuch as it is for two drafts. This change was introduced in order to give men called up for the 28th Reinforcements two months’ notice before being required to go into camp. In future the monthly ballot will be for one draft only, the men being given two months’ notice before being required to parade for camp.
