SEDITION MONGERS SENTENCED.

Christchurch Jan. 19

At the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, Hubert Armstrong appeared on remand on a charge of seditious utterances. Mr Raymond, K.C., appeared for the Crown, and accused conducted his own case. Evidence was given of a speech by accused in Victoria Square on December 31st on lines similar to those of Cook and Semple. Accused denied any intention of sedition, and said he was simply speaking against conscription while recognising the menace of Germany. The Magistrate said the speech was seditious, and sentenced accused to one year’s imprisonment. Wellington, Jan. 19. Joseph Herbert Jones, labourer, who was a, member of the I.W.W. in Australia, was to-day sentenced by Magistrate McCarthy to twelve months’ hard labour on a charge of publishing seditious utterance. MAORILAND WORKER FINED. Wellington, Jan. 19. The Maorilund Worker Co. pleaded guilty before Mr McCarthy, S.M., to-day to publishing two scries of anti-conscription pamphlets last July and August without indicating tiie names and places of abode of its employers. Mr O’Regan, for the defence, said the case was one of pure oversight. Defendants were fined the minimum amount of £5 on each charge and costs. The firm of Touman, Garratt and Barker was lined £5 and costs on a charge of printing a manifesto in reference to the repeal of the Military Service Act and neglecting to print or write on a copy thereof the name and place, of abode of their employer. Defendants did the work for the Maoriland Worker, and use that paper’s imprint instead of their own. *
