Campbell, Coast Defence Commander, says: ‘'Our artillery lias been doing- excellent work on the Somme. The casualties have been heavy, and young- Davies is a great loss. lie was a capital tellow. i should he glad if you will make public, in your capacity as eomutender of the Wellington Garrison, how very natch we all regret and deplore not only the loss of Davies, hut also Fleming I loss, formerly of the sth li’egimenl, and Dr. Marlin, of Palmet'slon Xorll*. They were all three men excellent ollieers, and i have the highest opinion of their capacity and the services lliey have rendered, I think that I lie public of the Dominion should know about their citizen army and their Expeditionary Force at the front, and Urn more they know about them the heller.
