A brief report of (lie speech hy Mr Theodore Roosevelt, in which he dechired his attitude towards Germany, was received hy cable. The I'uli (ext of his remarks is reported in American newspapers received hy the last mail. Speaking at Denver on October 2-1 th, Mr Roosevelt, said that if lie had been president, and had sent President Wilson’s
"strict accountability message" to Oermany, “there would have been no more ships sunk unless there was a light afterwards. The Lusitania was sunk, with its ]3!)4 deaths, as a consequence, because other nations believed we would welcome being kepi out of the war. If 1 had been president then I would have seized every interned German ship and (hen I would have saiij to Germany: "Mow, we’ll sn<# not what yon are going to give us as compensation for this, but what we are going to give you." J abhor a needless, wanton war. But if it were necessary to protect our women end children, 1 would have gone to war as the Entente Powers did. When 1 was president and Germany wanted to assume control of Venezuela temporarily’ i got ready and had every ship iu the fleet: down south of Porto Rico. And J got the arbitration I asked fox’, because Germany knew I meant what I said, it il had been otherwise we would have had a German stronghold iu Venezuela and most of the present war would have been fought right here at oar front door.
