O’Donnovan, of Welliny,!on, ns Commissioner of Police, had been appi’oved. .Mr O’Donnovan has a record of 30 years of good service in the New Zealand police, having joined the force nfc Wellington in March, 1879. He was for 17 years a constable in W ellington, and then he served for three years at Strafford. He took (he rank of sergeant, in charge of Hawera station, in 1897, bnt ho had been only a couple of months there when he was brought; to Wellington hy Commissioner Tunbridge to act as section sergeant. Paler Commissioner Tunbridge established a (raining depot for reernils at Mount Cook station, and Sergeant O’Donnovau was eleeted as instructor. tie was appointed snb-inspec-lor in Wellington on the retirement ot Inspector Pender. This position lie occupied until 1908, when lie wen! to take charge of Palmerston North station as sub-inspector. In 191 1 iie was made Inspector at Invercargill. Tie was later transferred to Napier, and Hum to Dunedin, al ihe latter station taking rank as superintendent. On the retirement of Mr .1. Ellison from the position of Superintendent of Wellington district, Mr O'Donnovan. wont to Wellington in November,' 1915, and it has been fairly generally known ever since Dial lie was to he Mr Cullen’s successor as Commissioner.
