SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the local State School Committee was held on Tuesday night. Present : Messrs Hornblow (chairman), McMnrray (secretary), Betty, Hussey, McColl, and Perreau. Apologies were received from the Rev. J. 11. Bredin and Mr Woods.

Correspondence was read and received from the Board re alterations to the head teacher’s residence and granting leave of absence to Mr

Gabites to attend military officers’ training camp. The Chairman’s action in regard to the carrying out of minor repairs and the steps taken to complete the work in respect to the class-room doors and steps leading to same was endorsed. It was pointed out that the new work would cost £22 odd, and that the Board had consented to defray half-cost.

The head teacher’s report was read and received, and stated, inter alia, “that the attendance had been somewhat affected by the prevalence of whooping-cough. The averages for the past four weeks were, 332.(5, 332.2, 344.(5, 325.7. The average l for the whole period was 337.7 out of tin average roll number of 3(ifi.5.” Several minor matters were referred to which the Committee have, in hand.

Tint inspector’s annual report was submitted to the Committee, and disclosed a very satisfactory state of affairs, and the Committee recorded its appreciation of same. A generous offer was received through the head teacher from Mrs Austin-. Johnston offering to pay half-cost of asphalting the front footpath and assembly. The Chairman said this was a work of necessity, and the offer would be much appreciated by the Committee as the funds were very low. It. was resolved to write! and thank Mrs Austin-. Johnston for her offer, and obtain an estimate of the work forthwith. Accounts were passed for payment. Messrs Betty and MeColl were apjminted visitors for the month. Mr iMcColl consented to attend to the tank overflow. Donations of 5s each were received from Mr .Jacksou, Messrs Perreau and Hussey towards repairs to piano.
