TURNING DOWN RETURNED SOLDIER.
Auckland, Sept. 20,
The -manual branch of the Auckland. Education Board having a vacancy for a bookkeeper, the supervisor communicated with the Returned Soldiers’ Employment Bureau, which recommended Sergt.Major Green. When the latter applied. for the position he was informed by the director that he had decided to recommend A. Schultz, whose qualifications eminently lilted him for the position. * At the Board meeting several members took exception to the director’s action, maintaining that preference should be given to a returned soldier.
Answering questions, the director said Sschultz was 21 years of age. The recruiting officer had informed him that he was probably not required for active service. Though Sshultz could be traced back to German antecedents, his father was a Scotchmen. The Board decided to defer making the appointment, and to call for applications again.
