FOXTON PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.
The monthly meeting of the Society was held at the Council Chambers on Thursday evening last, the president (Mr A. Eraser) presiding , over a small attendance of members. An appeal for assistance was received from the Anzac Club, Palmerston North, and it was resolved to devote the proceeds of the Patriotic Shop from a Saturday in August to the Club. The Secretary reported that the balance in hand tor the wounded soldiers fund was £1,232, that the Patriotic Shop had raised £2fi for (lie Belgian Relief Fund and £22 7s 9d for the Christmas Gifts Fund, and that the net proceeds of the concert in aid of the Naval Dependents’ Fund was £39 7s Od. One pound weekly for four weeks was granted to a discharged soldier who applied for assistance. It was decided to place a further £250 in the post office savings bank. A letter was received from the Minister tor Defence (hanking the Society for its efforts to complete the National Register. The matter of holding a jumble sale for the AA’ounded Soldiers’ Fund was mentioned, and arrangements were deferred until a later date. The idea of incorporating a series of . war addresses and debates .with the monthly meetings was further discussed, but owing to want of interest displayed by the members the matter was allowed to drop. Ladies who are kindly collecting the contents of the patriotic boxes are reminded that the donations for August should be handed to Mr E. Healey as soon as possible. Three or four districts are yet to come in. The Patriotic Shop was open as usual last Saturday, under the charge of Mesdames Mandl and Alex. Ross, and good business was done. Gifts are gratefully acknowledged from the following; —Mesdames Signal,’ C. Robinson, A. Ross, Woods, Harvey, P. Robinson, King, Healey, Edwards, Mandl, Jas, Stevenson, J. Ross, Campbell (Moutoa), F. Robinson, Fraser, Newth (Montoa), G. Rough, John Robinson, A. S. Easton, F. Procter, Haynes, Kellow, Moore, H. Thymic, W. Ross, Thompson, Renton, De Ridder, Misses Robinson, Rough, J. A. Ross, Speirs, Messrs Shailer (Himatangi), Hughes, Joe King, A. Ross, G. Coley, Mitchell, Walker and Furrie, W. Ross, Rivers (Himatangi), and a Friend. The weight-guessing- competition for a sheep presented by Mr Geo. Coley, realised £4 8s fid. ’flic sheep weighed 811 lbs., and twelve competitors guessed the right weight, and each received a yiortion. The cake presented by Miss Woodroofe was keenly competed for, and five competitors were successful. The takings next Saturday will he devoted to the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund, and the shop will be under the charge of Mesdames Kerr-His-lop and Kellow. An. anonymous donor has- presented a sheep for competition, and same will be on view at Mr AVoodroofe’s shop on Friday and Saturda v, when guesses may he handed in.
