“KING OR PEOPLE” IN GREECE.
The constitutional points at issue between King Constantine and the people of Greece have been set forth by M. Vcnizelos in the followingquestions:—“Has the Crown the right to seek its z-esponsible ooun-selloz-s among men whom it prefers owing to their pcz-sonalily or their political ideas, or is it compelled to accept as its counsellors those indicated by the people’s verdict"? Has the Crown the right to form its own opinion on great national questions and impose it independently of the people’s verdict by the repeated dissolution of Parliament, which it justifies on the ground that it has responsibilities towards the Almighty, z-egarding which no explanations are owed to the people?” Izz the matter of foreign policy, M. Vcnizelos added: “Greek people must thoroughly realise that Greece cannot exist as an independent political and economic organisation without friends and allies in the Balkans for the protection of her Balkan intez-ests, nor without friends and allies among the Great Powers for the protection of her Mediterranean interests, and for financial assistance.” The questions asked may be summed up in the three words: “King or People?” Of course, there is only ozze way izz which they can be answered. The subtleties of German intrigue have merely delayed the inevitable expression of Hellenic rights and sentiments. They could no moz-c pz-e----vent it than King Canute oz - Mrs Partizigton could prevent the (lowing of the tide.
