A remarkable, instance of ,selfsacrifice in the cause of patriotism was cited recently by the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr Holland, in connection with the raising of the Dominion Avar loan. After addressing a public meeting on this subject, he received a call at his house from a very old resident, a. man of over 70 years of age. He said that he and his wife were principally dependent for their livelihood upon the old age pension, but by doing such Avork as he could get given to him he had been able to save a few shillings, and he Avas accumulating a. little fund for the purchase of an appliance ivhich Avould he of help to his inJirmities. HoAvever, what the Mayor had said on the subject of the necessity for subscription to the Avar loan had convinced him that it avus his duty to give up his savings for the purpose. He could not sleep, he said, until he had handed the Mayor the sum of £3 Avhich he had hoarded up. The Mayor promised to make the investment, and offered to lend 4s to enable the purchase of four certificates, to bo effected. The offer Avas accepted Avith thanks and the Mayor Avas asked to take charge of the certificates, a request AA’hich Avas readily granted. “1 consider,” said the Mayor, after telling the story, “that a nobler sacrifice could not have been made in the cause of patriotism than that of this poor old age pensioner.”
