SPECIAL MEETING.

A sjieciiil meeting of the Pox ton Borough Council was hold Inst night to receive applications for the combined positions of Inspector of Nuisances, ranger, etc., and general. There wore present: The Mayor (Mr A If. Eraser), and Crs Coley, Henderson, Whihley, McColl, Stevenson, Bryant, Simmons and Thompson. An apology for absence was received from Cr Freeman.

Four applications were received and the Mayor moved, and Cr Stevenson seconded, that Air T. Ward be appointed.

As an amendment, Cr "Whibloy moved, and Cr Bryant seconded, that Air H. A. Walls be appointed. On being put, the amendment was lost.

A further amendment was moved by Cr McColl, and seconded by Cr Simmons, that the application of Air J. AlcKnight be accepted. This amendment was carried, and Air AlcKnight was appointed to the position. THE TRAIN SERVICE. ’l’he Afayor gave a brief outline of the conference with Air J. E. Armstrong, district railway traffic manager, in reference to the suggested alterations in the Foxton-Palmers-ton North time-table, and it was decided, on his motion, seconded by Cr Coley, that the Council approve of the suggested Foxton-Palmerston North time-table, as placed before the Council’s representatives by the District Traffic Alanager. TOWN HALL. Air W. Smith, lessee of the Coronation Town Hall, applied for the installation of a shunt regulator on the engine, the estimated cost, incblding labour and installation, being £l(s odd. Air Smith offered to install same if the Council would pay (he cost of (he appliance, about £Bl7s (id.

Cr Stevenson said the appliance was a necessity, and should have been installed with the plant in the first place. It would minimise the risk of fire.

Crs McColl and Bryant asked if (his work should not he done by the lessee himself. The terms of his lease stated that lie should keep the building and plant, in order. The Mayor said that the appliance in question was new machinery, and the conditions of the lease only provided for the keeping of the plant as it stood in good order. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Whibley, seconded by Cr Henderson, that Mr Smith’s request for a. shunt regulator be granted on the terms in his letter.
