FREIGHT INCREASES.
THREE POUNDS ON HEMP. FIVE POUNDS ON TOY'. TO TAKE EFFECT NEXT MONTH. As from September Ist, Height, to London on hemp will be increased to £lO per ton, plus the usual 10 per cent, primage. From the same date ireight on tow and stripper slips will he increased to £l3 per ton plus ten per cent.
The above increases will affect ail hemp, tow and stripper-slips not in store on August 31st.
At present the freight; on hemp to London is £7 per ton, plus ten jjer cent., a total of £7 14s Od, but the above increase will bring the total to £ll, being an increase of £3 6s Od per ton. The existing freight and primage on tow totals £8 16s Od, and the increase now fixed together with the 10 per cent, primage, will bring the total up to £l4 6s od, an addition of £5 10s per ton. The total freight and primage charges on hemp on November 18th last was £5 5s Od per ton, and the increase now fixed will represent a rise of practically 100 per cent.
Prior to the outbreak of war the freight charges amounted to about £4 per ton.
This new increase will be a serious matter for a. number of millers who are delivering under contracts subject to freight alterations. In several cases millers have uncompleted contracts which are subject to previous increases of from £1 2s 3d to £2 2s Od per ton, and the above will mean a further deduction of £3 6s Od per ton, so that the net price per ton they will he receiving will be very considerably under the actual cost of milling the hemp.
